Real Beasts
A food and yoga performance to channel everyone's inner-big-cat.

Cats, cats, everywhere cats. In old cities and new. Stone cats. Marble cats. Wooden cats. Plastic cats. Pompous cats. Big cats. Minding gates. Looking for predators. Warning against the enemy. They prey. They prowl. The nocturnal giants surround us. Their fixed gazes are frozen in stone and their authority is masked by the urban cacophony. But their power lives inside us and our subconscious. In times like these, we need to channel our inner ‘Big Cat’.
Yoga and food performance
In this performance "Real Beasts" I dress as a domestic yoga teacher in a bright pink training suit. Standing on a red yoga mat, I invite exhibition visitors to join in the performance. They can choose to be part of a chorus or as a participant in a yoga routine to learn how to find our inner 'big cat' through a selection of yoga poses. In the background to the performance the sound of roaring lions echoes around the gallery from a small speaker. Beginning with the cat pose, the yoga performance ends with a joint roar of voices in the lion pose. During the whole performance the 'chorus' speak out loud words relating to the attributes of lions and cats such as, independent, agile, playful, adventurous. The group yoga usually ends on a high because everybody learnt how to roar like a lion. As a big thank you to all the participants for being brave I offer them a hand-baked, pink coloured cats tongue cookie from a golden box. To my surprise people usually put the biscuits on their tongues while letting out big roars and taking selfies.
