STATEMENT

Penelope Richardson is a conceptual artist whose work is shaped by cultural histories and by the ways people connect with nature, history, and place. Her ideas grow through research, observation, chance discoveries, and conversations with people and materials. Her work often begins with a landscape, a story, or an overlooked history and unfolds in ways that can feel atmospheric, poetic, unsettling, or playful. Some works invite people to engage with them directly. She works across painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, and artist books, and uses contrast, humour, and irony to bring familiar things into a new light.

ABOUT

I grew up on the bushy outskirts of Sydney, surrounded by water, birdsong, and the scent of eucalyptus. I studied painting and lithography at the National Art School and Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.

After receiving a postgraduate scholarship, I moved to Bogotá, Colombia, a city on a high plateau 2,600 metres above sea level, where I studied at the Universidad de los Andes from 1992 to 1995. Alongside my studies in Spanish and Latin American art history, I developed my studio practice and became part of the local art community. It was in Bogotá that my practice shifted towards conceptual art, driven by an interest in how stories, landscapes, and personal and collective histories intersect.

My work is shaped by place, memory, research, cultural histories and lived experience, and moves across drawing, painting, installation, performance, photography, participative projects, sculpture and artist books.

From 1995 to 2008 I lived in Melbourne, where I completed a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University and further developed a practice grounded in conceptual and interdisciplinary experimentation.

Since 2008 I have lived and worked in Munich, Germany, where I exhibit, curate, teach art workshops, and lecture in art. Germany's landscapes, histories, and cultural perspectives continue to provide new contexts for my work.
